The "Lokettenzaal" in the Flemish Parliament - Brussels 2007
The Flemish Parliament intends to turn the "Lokettenzaal" once again into a Flemish meetingplace or a marketplace with a number of functions such as a place to meet, an information room, a parliament shop and a brasserie, in a well-considered combination.
Point of departure for this design is the typical Flemish marketplace as a place for people to meet, for market activities and festivities. The design is the portrayal of the very lively market on the square where the taut functionality of the Lokettenzaal is the metaphor for the vertical, straight-lined historical stepped gables and the belfry, so typically Flemish …
In line with the architecture of Victor Bourgeois this design is a public inner space where the market (shop, brasserie and information desk) takes place. It is a transparent, clear and well-organized space with free entrance. The visitor, like the market-goer, can move freely and easily. The glass partitions and walls never touch in the corners and the fact that the functional space is turned inside out generates a lot of open space inside and an open dynamic character outside. This choice was inspired by the organised disorderliness of a marketplace on a market day.
On the central wall, the tables and the bar ceramic designs by Benoît van Innis are incorporated.
