Renovation square "Het Eiland", - City of Harelbeke 2011-2012

The renovation of this square is the result of active participation of local residents and local people in charge. This project will be realized step by step by the inhabitants and the local people in charge.
A continuous bench consists of a series of identical concrete casts that are positioned lengthwise. On the vertical sides different reliefs form one frieze over the entire length. All reliefs are designed and realized by the local residents and the Academy of Fine Arts.
On the square, not in its centre, is a shelter referring to the traditional kiosk. Since Harelbeke has a long history of music perception and since the conservatory is nearby, the presence of the kiosk on this square is only logical. Moreover, this shelter can for example also be used as pavilion for temporary art exhibitions or installations from students from the Academy of Fine Arts.
The square must be well lit with simple light fittings and during the summer months there should be enough shadow, provided by trees. The kiosk, the trees and the light fittings almost form one random and repetitive arrangement of vertical-linear elements.
